Story

In the summer of 2012 a group of 30 individuals including myself will be making our way to Tanzania ready to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the African based charity ‘Dig deep.’

Standing at 3,895m, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the largest free standing mountain in the world. To put this formidable climb into context – it reaches a height equivalent to 18 Eiffel towers and will take a total of six days to complete the climb.

Only 40% of those that set out to conquer the ‘white mountain’ manage to reach the summit, and anyone who knows me will realise I am in no way an avid climber or physically adept to such a feat. To reach my goal I will be training myself physically and mentally, hiking in the Lakes and Peak District before aiming to conquer the three peaks and compete in the Sheffield half marathon.

By no means will this be an easy task - along with devoting my time to training for the trek, I will be fundraising throughout the year for the charity ‘Dig Deep’ (www.digdeep.org.uk) an organisation who aim to provide water, cooking gas and electricity to deprived communities in Kenya. The money I raise from climbing Kilimanjaro will fund their next water project.

In 2009 I spent several months volunteering in the Town ships and communities of South Africa, helping improve the quality of life for those who suffered most from the repercussions of the apartheid and its corrupt government regimes. Without sounding like a walking cliché, the notion of a self-sustainable Africa is very close to my heart, and the idea that a group of 30 students could have a real impact on the cause is one I am very proud to be a part of.

If you would like to be a part of the cause and sponsor my climb, you can support me either through this page or contact me directly through facebook, email or text. The aim is to raise a total of £2,500 which will cover both my expenses (which I am also contributing towards) and £1000 of which will be donated directly to the Dig Deep. Following the climb I will be visiting some of the communities which Dig Deep is helping to improve. If you choose to sponsor me I will be keeping an online blog of my training and will happily send you photographs and information showing you exactly where your sponsorship will be going.

Please donate as gernously as you can but remember that anything you contibute will be greatly appreciated.

Love, Sadie xx
