Tuberculosis (TB) is a curable disease yet it remains one of the world’s leading killers, taking three more lives every minute of every day. Each year, there are over 8 million new cases from which 2–2.5 million will die.

The UK is currently facing alarming increases of its own with numbers rising nationally since 1987 and if a concerted effort is not made to ensure adequate resourcing of programmes to combat TB then we will have a much more serious and expensive problem to sort out.

Sustained financial investment in tuberculosis programmes is crucial. Health care staff, buildings, administration, microbiological facilities and drugs all cost money and their continued provision are essential in the maintenance of high quality care.

People on low incomes in the are not always exempt from prescription charges and may therefore have to pay for their TB drugs. Because it is treated with several antibiotics and takes at least six months to cure, the cost to the patient can be as much as £200. TB Alert is adamant that TB treatment should be free of charge to anyone who needs it.

TB Alert is the 's National and International Tuberculosis charity - the only British charity working solely on fighting TB in the and overseas.

TB Alert is a young charity, registered in late 1998 and launched at the Houses of Parliament on World TB Day (24th March) 1999. It was set up by people who felt that with its long tradition of TB work, there should be a greater response in to the resurgent threat of tuberculosis - already declared a global emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1993.

TB Alert is the first TB-specific charity in since the 1960s when earlier organisations, assuming too soon that the disease had been vanquished, faded away or moved on to other interests

TB Alert exists to work towards the control and ultimate eradication of TB by increasing access to effective treatment for all.
