Today we are launching our Honolulu Marathon Challenge 2011 in aid of Operation Smile. Our pledge it to raise enough money to provide life changing surgery for 10 children to enable them to smile again.
Why Honolulu? Because it's taking place in the middle of winter (just to make training that little more interesting and dark), because when we get there it will be 90 degrees (and we will melt) and because... well, why wouldn't you run a marathon 10 time zones away with intense jetlag ?! If that isn't enough, one of us is running with a ruptured tendon and has just been "approved" to start training this week (GO DAWN!). We need you to keep us motivated over the next 67 days and you can do this by pledging sponsorship through our page, helping us reach our goal.
What is Operation Smile? Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft -- often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can't afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life. That's where Operation Smile comes in as an international charity providing much needed surgical services through the help of dedicated medical volunteers. They have provided more than 2 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
We run on 11th December. Help us make a difference to children's lives.
Thank you!
Sarah and Dawn
p.s. we will consider running in our Go Karting outfits by popular request!
Together, We Will Change Lives
Operation Smile mobilizes a world of generous hearts to heal children’s smiles and transform lives across the globe. Operation Smile’s network of volunteers works worldwide to repair childhood facial deformities including cleft lips and cleft palates.
I hope you'll help me bring hope to even more children and their communities.
