Rotterdam Marathon · 10 April 2011

Rotary Clubs are working to make the world free of the terrible disease of polio. Rotary is now raising £140m and Bill Gates has matched this with £160m. £1 vaccinates 5 children. Over 2 billion young children have been immunized, but the job is not complete and polio could return.

Story

I am running the Rotterdam Marathon on 10th April 2011 in aid of Rotary’s campaign to `End Polio Now` throughout the world.  It would be fantastic to receive your support…

Hello! My name is Sarah Perry.  I am currently a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar studying at Robert Gordon’s University in Aberdeen, Scotland.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time living in Aberdeen as an Ambassadorial Scholar and am looking forward to giving back by raising funds for Rotary International’s End Polio Now project.

I absolutely love running and have entered to run the Rotterdam Marathon.  I will run the Rotterdam Marathon representing Rotary International in support of the eradication of polio.  I ran my first marathon May 2010 in Cincinnati Ohio, at a time of 4 hours 2 minutes. The Rotterdam Marathon will be my first international marathon! I hope to run the Rotterdam Marathon under 4 hours time.

I am sponsored as an Ambassadorial Scholar by the Rotary Club in Morgantown West Virginia Rotary in Rotary District 7530.  In Scotland I am hosted by the St. Nicholas Rotary Club, Rotary District 1010.   For the last 5 months I have spoken at over a dozen Rotary Clubs, participated in local community and Rotary events and have learned a great deal and shared with many others about the initiatives of Rotary.

One specific initiative of Rotary (Rotary’s top priority for more than 20 years!) has particularly stood out to me. This initiative is Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio throughout the world.

With your Support ... I will run the Rotterdam Marathon in honour of every child who has lost their ability to run and walk due to the transmission of the polio virus.  With your support … I will run the Rotterdam Marathon for every human being who suffers from this crippling disease.  With your support…I will to run the Rotterdam Marathon to eradicate polio.  With your support…we will insure that polio never again robs a child’s ability to walk and run. I need your support.

Support me Per Mile … I am asking every Rotarian, Rotary Club, and individual I come in contact with to support me per mile, or to donate any amount regarded appropriate.

£1 per Mile = £26

50p per Mile = £13

25p per Mile = £6.50

Goal… Raise £2,600 to eradicate polio.

£1 = 5 polio vaccines. So £2,600 will vaccinate 13,000 children!

If you are a member of a Rotary club state the name of your club in the box for messages. We will then ensure that your club is credited with your donation. In the UK Gift Aid will be added if you ask Just Giving to do so.

Important Details … 100% of your support will go directly towards the eradication of Polio – I have taken the responsibility of funding my trip to Rotterdam and my entrance to the marathon from my own finances.

Rotary International and the Importance of Polio Eradication … Amazingly, polio is completely preventable! Immunizing every child until transmission stops will completely eradicate the infectious disease.  Thanks to Rotary and its partners, the world has seen polio cases plummet by more than 99 percent, preventing five million instances of child paralysis and 250,000 deaths. But the polio cases represented by that final 1 percent are the most difficult and expensive to prevent.  That is why it is so important to generate the funding needed to ‘End Polio Now’. To fail is to invite a polio resurgence that would condemn millions of children to lifelong paralysis in the years ahead.

The Ambassadorial Scholarship Program … is designed to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The Ambassadorial Scholarship programme is The Rotary Foundation's oldest programme and today it is one of the world's largest privately funded international scholarships.

More about the Rotterdam Marathon…The Rotterdam Marathon is an annual marathon that has been held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands since 1981. It has been held in April of every year since the third edition in 1984, and attracts many top athletes. It has also been ranked as one of the top 10 marathons in the world by Runner's World magazine.
