Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As most of you know by now, I will be going trekking through Brazil for 10 days in February 2011.
We fly to Brazil overnight on the 3rd Feb, and do not fly back to the UK until the 13th Feb. Once in Brazil we travel to the northeast region of Brazil to the Chapada Diamantina National Park.
Chapada is a Brazilian word meaning steep cliffs, and Diamantina refers to the diamonds that were found in the park in the 1800's.
We will be trekking through the "Lost World" of Brazil, covering 84km (just over 50 miles) in 5 days. The trek will take us to heights of up to 500m and we will see and trek across a number of waterfalls (including Brazil's highest waterfalls, known as the Smoke Falls), caves, underground waterfalls, subterranean rivers and mountains. Parts of the trek will be challenging as they are very steep, and high.
Whilst trekking we will be staying with local people and eating Brazilian foods. It will be back to basics! There is no mobile phone signal in the park so I will not be taking my mobile with me at all (10 days without my phone is a challenge by itself lol). We will also be amongst a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and small mammals. We may also get to see jaguars and pumas whilst trekking.
There will be 15-20 of us trekking altogether (none of whom I know) and each of us has pledged to raise £2,995 for the charity Sense so we need your help.
Sense supports and campaigns for deafblind adults and children and the money we raise will really make a difference to these peoples lives.
£5 - could buy a set of musical bells to help stimulate even the tiniest amount of a deafblind child's hearing music thearpy
£15 - could pay for tactile book to develop a child's sense of sight and touch
£25 - could buy an interactive light tube to help stimulate a deafblind child's remaining sight
£50 - could help pay for a deafblind child's vital first assessment
£700 - could send a deafblind child on a dream holiday
£1,000 - could enable Sense to buy a sonic chair at one of their day centres, enabling more deafblind people to benefit from these sensations. These chairs heat up, massage and vibrate at different frequencies.
I think seeing and hearing are things the majority of us take for granted and I for one could not imagine not being able to see/hear. Without Sense's help these people would live a very isolated life. So please help us to raise money to really make a difference for them.
