I DID IT!!!!
I trekked along the Wild Wall of the Great Wall of China to raise money for Fight for Sight.
It was a massive challenge but an increadible experience. I met some fab people, saw some amazing sights and most of all challenged myself beyond anything I have done before, but enjoyed every second!!
Fight for Sight is the UK’s leading charity funding world-class research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye disease since 1965. Fight for Sight researches a wide range of eye conditions including macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy as well as the causes of childhood blindness.
- In the UK:
- - 2 million people are visually impaired
- - Over 360,000 people are registered blind or visually impaired
- - Age-related macular degeneration (40%), glaucoma (13%) and diabetic retinopathy (8%) are the three most common causes of visual impairment of those registered as visually impaired
- - 25,000 children under the age of 16 are visually impaired
- - By the age of 65, 1 in 6 will become blind or partially sighted
Every day around 120 people in the UK start to lose their sight.
For those of you who know me, you will know that this is a personal challenge for 2 main reasons:
1) my mum has experienced sight loss as a result of glaucoma and for 5 years has undergone treatments and operations to prevent the condition from worsening and prevent further visual loss. I don't want other people to experience this. Research that Fight for Sight funds might just find a way to prevent my mums glaucoma getting worse!
2) I am not the fittest person in the world! Treking along the steep inclines for up to 7 hours a day, including tackling over 1200 steps in one day will be a huge personal challenge. The wild wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty, many parts are unmaintained and quite rough - it is not the well maintained tourist section you might have seen in travel books. It will be tough and by no means an easy jaunt to China!
It isn't going to be easy for me, but I'm training hard Ive already climbed Snowdon as part of my training, which is something I never dreamed I'd be able to do! But Im determined to do more. Sight is something we all take for granted and we don't realise how important it is until we risk losing it. This happens to too many people in the UK and worldwide each year. Every penny can help fund vital research into treatments and prevention that someone you know, or even you, may need one day!
