SCAPA FLOW DIVING CHALLENGE · 31 January 2008

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

Hi, thanks very much for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.

I started diving at the relatively old age of 56 in March 2007 and it has been my ambition since then to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  From my earliest days of diving I have been supported by James Doel (23) who has agreed over a six day period from 31 May 2008 to 6 June 2008 to dive with me the deep scuttled wrecks of the 1st World War German North Sea Fleet in Scapa Flow. Preparing for this and the extra risks that deep diving brings to someone of my age has led us to invest heavily our time and effort to dive the wrecks safely and well. Without James' support, help, advice and friendship I wouldn't be in a position to attempt this challenge. The bond of trust that has developed between us, as divers and friends is clear to all and essential to the challenge.

For me cancer has a particular resonance having been diagnosed with cancer of the prostate in September 2007, whilst my personal battle goes on I hope that we can improve the lives of teenagers suffering the effects of cancer.  Throughout our training and during the dives we have been and will be supported by our local Berkshire based dive centre DiveCrew.  Some of our more experienced diving friends at DiveCrew; Penny Wilson, Andy Collins, Rowland O’Connor and Lisa Miles are joining us in the Challenge. You can find out more about the Challenge at www.divecrew.co.uk

PADI the largest dive training organisation in the World is supporting us and divers will find articles appearing in the dive press about the Challenge over the forthcoming months.

We are looking for sponsorship from individuals, groups and the corporate world.  To be told you have cancer, I know from personal experience is devastating to be told when you are a teenager or young adult must be overwhelming.

Please, please, please support this challenge it can and will make so much difference to young people suffering from cancer.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Teenage Cancer Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor us now!

Thank you so, so much for your support.

Richard, James, Penny, Andy, Rowland and Lisa
