Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. This is a really tough personal challenge, possibly the toughest physical challenge I have ever taken on !!!
Not only is there the discomfort of camping in the wild with no toilets, no showers, and only basic provisions, but there is the physical challenge of walking to the mountain, the climb, fraught tempers and other emotions that are inevitable in a small group, and then there is the altitude...............all of the books and everybody I have spoken tell me altitude sickness is guaranteed. Apparently I am going to feel rubbish, really unwell with headaches, fatigue and sickness, and there is a 30% chance that I will not make it to the summit!!
So why am I doing this? A few years ago I had knee surgery (on both knees) and having trained hard, I tested them last year on the National 3 Peaks Challenge finishing in an impressive 21 hours. However my target has always been Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest peak in Africa, a personal challenge of mine since I was little.
I am leaving for Africa on 7 October and before then, I would like to raise money for Winstons Wish. They are an amazing charity that started here in Cheltenham in 1992, providing much needed help and support to bereaved children and their families throughout the UK. I have some personal experience working with their expert counsellors and supporters and have realised that you cannot underestimate the impact of bereavement on children.
Winstons Wish rely on donations and anything you can donate to encourage me to summit and support this charity will be gratefully received.
Many thanks, Scott
