My story

Hello welcome to my page,

My name is Scott Michael Gigg Nielsen and I am 18 years old.

Starting on August the 15th 2011 I will be cycling from Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen (through Europe) to Alder Hey in Liverpool, which will take around 2 weeks and is approximate 2000km.

This trip is to raise money for ASBAH which is a charity who support families and individuals to overcome challenges produced by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek ‘hydro’ meaning water and ‘cephalie’, meaning brain.

A watery fluid, known as cerebro-spinal fluid or CSF, is produced constantly inside each of the four spaces or ventricles inside the brain: between 400 and 600mls is produced each day, this often leads to enlargement of the skull, mental disability, convulsion and even death.

The usual treatment is to insert a shunting device.

A shunt is simply a device which diverts the accumulated CSF around the obstructed pathways and returns it to the bloodstream.

My connection to this charity is I myself have hydrocephalus.

I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at age of just 15 months, it has been a intense physical and emotion battle for me and those who care for me. 2004 was the worst year as I was constantly in the hospital and I even came close to death, if it was not for my mum's heroic intervention.

I have had at least 20 major operations before reaching the age of 15, my last operation was march of 2006.

The trip is from the hospital in Denmark where I was diagnosed to the hospital where my last operation was.

This trip is to raise money to help individuals and families who are in a similar or worse position than that my mum and I found us in.

Thank you very much for your donation, it will be changing someones life to the better and for that I personally thank you.
