Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2012 · 26 May 2012 ·

The Fishermen's Mission is the only national charity working solely to support active and retired fishermen and their families by providing practical, financial and pastoral support. Fishing is dangerous and unpredictable. Hardship and tragedy are facts of everyday life in the UK’s fishing industry.

Story

Seafood team tackle the Edinburgh Marathon Festival for the Fishermen’s Mission

This Sunday 27 May, saw Dawn Sneddon of Seafish and Clare Dixon of Seafood Scotland complete the Edinburgh half marathon with 23,000 other competitors in aid of the Fishermen’s Mission. The colleagues ran through blazing sunshine on a route through the historic city to raise a total of £2835 for the worthy cause. Taking part in the Hairy Haggis relay team were Libby Woodhatch (Seafood Scotland), Janice Anderson (Seafish), and kindly stepping in at late notice to join the team on behalf of Lesley Cunningham (Seafood Scotland) and Nicki Holmyard (Seafood Scotland), Jack McCormack (Lochend Amateur Boxing Club) and Jane Sandell (Scottish Fishermans Organisation).

The run was the culmination of many months of training in much more challenging weather conditions as Clare Dixon (Seafood Scotland) explains:

“We have run through the sleet and snow through Edinburgh’s streets for several months now, but the heat was something that we hadn’t necessarily prepared for! There was a real buzz on the day, and it was really exciting to be part of such a big event raising money for a fantastic organisation, close to our industry’s heart”

Dawn Sneddon of Seafish continues: “We’ve done ourselves proud and we’re extremely pleased to have raised £2835 for the Mission! We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has taken time to sponsor us!”

Running on a mission!

3 days to go and we're excited about this weekends Edinburgh Marathon Festival!

After a couple of last minute injuries to 2 of the Hairy Haggis Relay team, Nicki and Lesley have unfortunately stepped down. But in their place, 2 fantastic ladies have offered their time and effort to make up the spaces!

Welcome on board and a HUGE thank you to Jack McCormack (Lochend Amateur Boxing Club) and Jane Sandell (Scottish Fishermen's Organisation).

Did you know that fishing is the most dangerous job in the UK? On average every year 68 fishermen are killed or seriously injured and 25 boats are lost.

6 tough fishy colleagues from Seafood Scotland and the Edinburgh SEAFISH office have decided to support this charity so close to the industry we work with and have signed up for the Edinburgh Marathon.

We hope you will support us in our mission and thank you for donations as big or small as you can afford.

The Fishermen's Mission fights poverty and despair in our fishing communities by providing crucial emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Over 13,000 men and women work in the UK's toughest and most dangerous peacetime occupation: deep sea fishing. At sea, they face death and injury on a daily basis. On land, many face insecurity and debt. And life for the 50,000 retired fishermen and their dependants is no better, with debt, inadequate pensions and scant savings meaning no respite from hardship once the fishing's over.
