Friends of Asha (GB) raises money and awareness for the work of Asha Community Health and Development Society. Asha works in 90+ slum colonies in Delhi, India. It improves health and provides support and education for over 750,000 slum dwellers, enabling them to make positive changes to their lives.

Story

Asha is an organisation working with people living in poverty in the slums of New Delhi in India. This summer I will be going out to Delhi to volunteer with Asha for 4 weeks. As part of this I will be teaching English to children in the slums. Education (and English in particular) is of course crucial to enabling slum children to obtain jobs and qualifications that will allow them to escape the poverty cycle of the slum environment.

100% of the £900 that I am raising here will go directly towards funding 2 Asha students (£450 each) through their first year at New Delhi University, including preparation workshops, admission process expenses, tuition fees, course books, and a set of new clothes.

Since 2008, Asha has sent nearly 600 children from the New Delhi slums to university. The dream and target is to get 5,000 slum children into Delhi University in the next 5 years. You can visit http://www.asha-india.org/ for more information about Asha’s Higher Education Programme.

I hope that you will support this life changing organistion by giving a donation that has a very real and hugely positive impact on the lives of those living in Delhi's slums.

What motivates me to raise this money and give my time and efforts to support Asha is the exceptional efficiency of Asha's relief model. All too often we see millions of pounds being sunk into NGO's and large charities alike. Asha operates on a budget of roughly £800,000 a year. With this it is able to support 400,000 people. This works out at roughly £2 per person. The money raised from this triathlon therefore is potentially one of the most worthwhile donations you will make as its impact in real terms is huge.

The date set for the Triathlon is Monday the 21st of May.

Many thanks for your generosity.

Seb Siersted
