My story

Thank you for taking the time to visit Seher and Atif's JustGiving page.

At present, one of the largest humanitarian disasters in modern times is unfolding in Pakistan, with UN figures indicating that 20 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 6 million people have no access to water or food supplies and that 4 million people's homes have been destroyed. The flooding has also destroyed livestock and this season’s harvest.

These circumstances are now conspiring to cause famine and epidemics of water borne diseases (including cholera) on an unprecedented scale. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable, with the UN estimating that of the 45,000 women due to give birth in the affected areas before the end of September, 25,000 of the infants born will not survive.

Doctors Worldwide have set up a medical facility in Pir Sabaq in the district of Nowshera to provide emergency medical care to those affected by the flooding - this is one of the hardest-hit areas which hosts a population of 30,000. We have volunteered to join the staff of the medical facility (flying out at our own cost on Friday 27th August) in our capacities as either a medical doctor or a relief worker.

So far the clinic is being attended by 200-300 adults and children per day with a host of illnesses including, diarrhoea, chest and skin infections and severe dehydration. It is becoming increasingly clear that medical care is not enough and Doctors Worldwide are now also providing food and clean water to patients.

Please donate generously in these people's hour of need.

UPDATE: Many thanks for your generous donations. These have been spent under the remit of Doctors Worldwide on a variety of projects within the area we were working in, specifically a food programme delivering a cooked meal every day to an Afghan refugee camp outside of Ghandery village near Nowshera, the building of new deep-bore water wells in the region, and the distribution of blankets for the upcoming winter and washable 'terry' nappies for babies within the camps to help stop the spread of infection. Hopefully, these projects will help bolster the health and well being of the people within the catchment area of the clinics Doctors Worldwide have been operating.

We're very grateful to have had the opportunity to see your donations go to work helping people in dire need.

Thank you

Seher and Atif
