Bliss is the leading UK charity for babies born premature or sick. We rely on donations to fund our work but with one baby admitted to neonatal care every five minutes we don’t have the resources to reach every baby who needs us. Your donation can help Bliss ensure every baby gets the best care.

Story

Our beautiful baby boy sebastian was born 12 weeks early due to devastating circumstances from the lose of his twin brother.

at first Sebastian started off his journey amazing doctors he was breathing unaided from 2 days old and was doing brilliantly. At 7 days old we discovered that Sebastian had suffered a intraventricular hemorrhage (bleed to the brain) this was a complete shock and devestation to our family but we had no other choice but to sit and wait for his outcome and exactly how this will effect the rest of his life.

At 14 days old Sebastian become very poorly and after repeated tests, scans and xrays we discovered that he had the very serious infection NEC that affects a baby intenstines and causes the organ to fail. we were on high alert to be transferred to bristol st micheals hospital for surgery but meraculously Sebastian responded well to a number of antibiotics and started to get better. at this point sebastian was unable to have an form of feeds and weighed in at 940grams. after 14 days off milk the doctors began to very cautiously introduce my milk at 1ml a day. we had a very daunting journey as Sebastian was so poorly and small he needed all the help he could get to help him.

after a total of 7 weeks Sebastian was on the road to recovery but then became even more poorly but this time doctors didnt know  what had caused this and again more blood tests were takn and thats when we found he had Strep B a potentially fatal infection that was in his blood. again so small Sebastian fought with all he could but he was very weak and anemic. Sebastian was put on to breathing equipment as even that was to much for our little man. the decission was made to give him a blood transfusion. i hae never been so scared in my life but as he was having many blood tests daily it was what was needed to allow sebastian to fight this terrible infection. but he did!!!

our journey didnt end there a week after coming off very strong antibiotics we had to face our final journey Sebastian needed surgery for a hernia. we were transferred to st micheals for this procedure and spent a total of 6 days on the intensive care unit.

Finally after everything that sebastian had been throgh and a total of 11 weeks on the Neonatal intensive care unit we were taking our baby boy home. he was 12 weeks old and weighed only 4lb in weight, we were so scared to bring such a tiny baby home but it was a day that i thought would never happen.

Bliss had help me and the family so much through all of this, it is so easy to write such a journey but after spending 12 hours a day 7 days a week on the unit and watching many doctors do everything they can to save our little boy it doesnt seem real anymore. we had the devestation of losing 1 son but our prayers answered to have such a happy and thriving beautiful baby boy
