Tall Ships Youth Trust is the UK’s oldest and largest youth development sail training charity. With a focus on helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, our mission is to enable them to fulfil their life potential through experiences at sea and by breaking down the barriers they face.

Story

On Saturday 8 April 2006 Sgt Carl Stephenson, Captain Bob Stephenson's son was killed by a lightning bolt during an unexpected severe electrical storm while training for his "Mountain Leader Training qualification"  whilst walking in the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland. Carl was just 29.

Carl was well known on the Tall Ships meeting up with his Dad on many occasions over the last 20 years. He had sailed on the schooners and was looking forward to sailing on the Brigs.

He loved the outdoor life, it was his ambition to be an Army outdoor Training Instructor.  Qualified in many outdoor activities including Advanced Diver he was a popular young man with a promising Army career ahead of him and is sorely missed

As a lasting memorial to Carl, Captain Bob and his family have formed the Sgt Carl Stephenson Memorial Fund to raise money for sponsoring young people from  Carl's home town of Withernsea, the Scouts and the Armed Forces to experience the Adventure of Sail Training with the Tall Ships Youth Trust.
