Story

Dear All,

As most of you are aware, I’m heading off to Equador on Nov 14th to do my most challenging cycle to date which I will be doing with 64 other cyclists in aid of Jersey Hospice.

The 8 day trip takes us from dense tropical rainforest over the Andes and down into the jungle and banana plantations of the Pacific coast.  We will travel through every type of landscape and through most weather conditions.  Humid and hot with occasional downpours in the jungle, cloudy and cold high up in the Andes and of course there is the altitude!  Training has been going well in Jersey and France but of course the altitude and terrain will be the unknown challenge.

Day 1 – 7 hour journey from Quito to Tena by bus.

Day 2 - Hot and humid but a gentle start to help us acclimatise (36k)

Day 3 – Tough start with a 35k climb to a high point of 2180m (60k)

Day 4 - With tired legs and the effects of the altitude we climb to Papallacta (3270m / 55k)

Day 5 – Undulating roads (I don’t like this word very much!) (75k)

Day 6 – Hot and humid as we make our way out of the mountains onto good roads from Puerto Quito towards Rio Blanco (75k)

Day 7 – Hot and humid in deep dense jungle we cycle to Viche (90k)

Day 8 – Steep climbs along the Pacific coast to our finishing point of Atacames (80k)

I am very excited to have the opportunity to go on such an amazing trip and to be part of this group supporting such a fantastic charity as Jersey Hospice.

Please give generously and I promise to relay my experience to you on my return.  I’m sure there will be a few funnies stories!

Sharon.
