Frank and Bob will have completed well over 100 miles by the end of today. They are both fit and well and believe they are getting fitter by the day! They managed yesterday's 15 miles without difficulty even though the guide book described it as "severe" - one of the toughest stretches of the route - a succession of steep ups and downs and the ups were VERY up. I know, I was there. I did one of the easier ones walking back to meet them at the afternoon coffee stop.
They have been extremely lucky. Thanks to so many kind generous, and helpful people.
Someone up above has looked after the weather for them
Gordon checked out their feet before they left -but was the Green Room at the Golf Club the place to do it!!??!!
Mike King and I took them to Minehead on the first day where photos were taken. We then went onto Porlock Weir to start walking for real - they had already practised Minehead to Porlock several times. I then took thier BIG rucksacks on to Lynbridge where they camped on the first night.
Then came the big test - walking carrying all their belongings and equipment. This proved to be tougher than anticipated especially as Frank's feet were sore. But sweet talking Frank asked very nicely and the next day the manager of the campsite at Newberry Park (Watermouth) took their luggage - for a small fee - on to Combe Martin.
This has now become the norm - walking unhindered. Frank's wife, Alyson spent a couple days transporting baggage and providing lunches. She also brought some replacement boots for Frank as he discovered the reason for his blisters was that he was loosing his sole (but not his soul!). I am in Bude doing likewise. Mike King is also in the area and will be helping out. Alyson is coming back for the weekend.
After that they will be into the furthest reaches of Cornwall - and on their own! However they have discovered a company who have found a niche in the market and will transport walkers luggage. They will be using them from Monday onwards.
more to come......
Click below the main photo to see some more photos of them setting off.
Frank Martin, 58 and Bob Shepherd, 62, will be walking the South West Coast Path - all 630 miles. They will be carrying their equipment on their backs and camping most nights. However, they are young enough to use few Youth Hostels on the way.
They will start on Wednesday April 7th from Minehead and walk until early May. They hope to reach somewhere close to Plymouth.
Then in early September they will complete the last 200+ miles to Poole.
Do feel free to join us on the way for a day or more.
