Over 5 days I will be trekking 180km whilst herding 100 Icelandic wild ponies. The route will take me through some amazing country: through lava-fields and rivers; past glaciers, volcanoes, geysers and deep blue lakes; on beaches and up mountains. We will be camping or sleeping in mountain huts, and hopefully coping with the challenge of cold showers (or no showers!!).
The BHS not only have a welfare scheme for distressed horses; but are responsible for education, training riding instructors, and approving riding schools. They work on access for riders (which also helps walkers!), and work closely with the Riding for the Disabled Association. They even provide accident cover for members. They therefore have the interests of both horses and their riders at heart.
Your sponsorship money will be spent on projects such as funding our network of more than 180 welfare officers who respond to reports of poor equine welfare throughout the UK. It will also be spent on campaigns to improve the lot of British horses – for example, they are working hard with the Animal Health Trust to combat the awful disease Strangles by raising money for a safe and effective vaccine against this potentially fatal condition. They are constantly working to change the law to protect horses and riders and to educate those who perhaps don’t keep their horses in a state that we would like.
