My story

Running is a passion. Running a marathon is a challenge. Running a marathon in London for Find Your Feet (FYF - www.fyf.org.uk) is an honour.

Find Your Feet is a UK based development charity with over 50 years of experience. They work with the poorest and most marginalised communities in rural India, Nepal, Malawi and Zimbabwe to help families build a future free from hunger and poverty.

There are no quick solutions to poverty and poor communities are best placed to help themselves. Instead of unsustainable handouts, they provide training and support that builds on the existing skills of the families they work with so they can gain the confidence and knowledge they need to transform their lives.

Following are a few instances of how FYF has made a difference …

Phulwasa, Mustafapur Village, Uttar Pradesh, India

Phulwasa (on the right) has been involved in a Find Your Feet project for two years. Phulwasa is the Treasurer of her village Self Help Group which has been set up to enable local women to meet twice a month to discuss and resolve the problems and challenges they face. Through the project the group have received agricultural training and now grow enough food to feed their families, along with gaining guidance and support on how to access vital services such as healthcare and education.

Phulwasa says, “We have received good knowledge from the project and learn how to make our life better. Previously we were not aware of the benefits of education but now our children have a chance at school and to get good jobs in the future so that poverty can be wiped out.”

Sumitra, Lucknowyanka Purwa Village, Uttar Pradesh, India

“Through the project, things have changed so much. Before, we had no money. We could not even afford medicine when our children were sick. Now, we have been able to access loans and training in sustainable farming to improve our agriculture and our incomes.

We are also helping our whole community. The village now has a hand pump for clean water, we are proud because our children are going to primary school, and a doctor is now visiting our village. The fear is gone. We have courage now. We are making our children’s future.”

Chamela, Uttar Pradesh, India

“We used to migrate to work in brick kilns. Even so we struggled to have enough money to eat and to clothe and educate our children.

Then, with Find Your Feet’s support myself and 15 other women took out a loan from our Self Help Group so that we could lease 12 acres of land and grow watermelons. Now we earn double what we put in. We use the profit to repair our houses and educate our children. We even have enough to save in the bank.

Now that I am contributing more to the family income there is a lot more trust between me and my husband. My elder daughter married early but now we are more aware and have more money. Our younger daughter wants to go on to higher education and both my husband and I are happy for her to do so.”

£165 - could provide a farmer in Zimbabwe with the training, skills and confidence to try new sustainable agriculture techniques, evaluate their success and demonstrate them to 25 other farmers so they can feed their families all year round.
