No parent expects to live longer than their child, but for many of the families we support, this is a reality. Julia's House, the Dorset & Wiltshire Children's Hospice charity provides frequent respite care for children and support for their families at home, in the community and at our hospice.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

So what's it all about Alfie I hear you ask. Well, I'm 50 in June ('no really?' I hear you all shout)...but yes, sadly it's true. A milestone many said I would never reach - mainly my Mother & Father. But eons ago, I grew up in Cornwall, where cowboy boots, grandad collars and an old waistcoat were de rigueur in the late 1970's - 10 years after everyone else had moved on to lace cuffs and bouffant hair.

So, although I had the Phil Oakey haircut, (not through fashion you understand, but the fact that to save money my sister cut my hair and Spec savers had yet to be invented) I was not exactly the 'man about town'. All the same, Cornwall has always seemed the place most like 'coming home'. Cetainly it is hard to sit on the harbour at Porthleven with a pint of Doombar in hand and not feel the weight of the world ease just a touch.

So to celebrate this rare feat, I have decided to revisit the land of piskies and pasties, churches and coves, (and first girlfriend snogs at beach parties somewhere around Looe Bar), and walk the whole of the Cornish Coastal Path. All 296 miles of it. And just to make it a bit of fun, I have decided to try to complete the course in 14 days or less, so that I do not lose any time with Alex, who will be with his Mum in America - smart kid - Disneyland or walking up hill down dale with Dad...mmmmmm.....???

Having decided on this admittedly very selfish challenge - taking myself away for 14 days with someone I love (me) - not a few people have asked, 'are you doing it for charity' and it seems to me too good an opportunity to miss. That said, I know times are tough, but I just thought, if I could get 400 people to give me £5, then I could raise £2,000 for Julia's House, our fabulous local charity here in Wimborne who need every spare penny they can get currently.

http://www.juliashouse.org/

So that's it then. Starting March 18th I will have one foot in Devon and one foot in North Cornwall, and I hope 14 days (and 14 lunchtime pasties) later, to repeat the same feat on the bridge over the Tamar near Plymouth. 296 miles. 14 days. 21 miles a day. Simples!!!

Someone who knows my legendary planning skills asked if I was worried I may get lost. 'Heck I said, if I keep the blue stuff on the right, and the green stuff on the left, then I reckon I should just about be OK'.

As to training, I have been eating the required large staek pasty every day for lunch for the last 3 weeks, so I reckon I will be fine!!

Your support would be that added incentive I may need when faced with Bedruthan Steps, Sennen Cove and a hundred other places I could mention that mountain goats would gasp for breath on.

So, if you can spare that £5 or maybe a tad more - Julia's House would be more than grateful I know - and I'll take the blisters and barnacles with a touch more good grace.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.
