Story
Did you know Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men in the UK? It will affect 1 in every 8 men!
Prostate cancer first made a sudden and unexpected appearance in our lives when my Grandad Jack was diagnosed in 1999. He continued to lead his normal active life for the first 6 months after the diagnosis but the cancer took hold becoming terminal and untreatable.
During the last few months of his life he became housebound and bedridden until he passed away in the spring of 2000 less than 12 months after the cancer was discovered.
The rapid deterioration in Grandad Jack's health that we witnessed as a family struck us hard and for obvious reasons lead his two sons (Paul and Richard) to take the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
The test revealed both Paul and Richard had dangerously high PSA counts and further testing and biopsies followed.
My Dad Paul's biopsies proved inconclusive and to this day he remains `At Risk` and completes regular re-tests every 3 months.
My uncle Richard tested positive and his prostate was removed within 3 months. The fact that Prostate cancer can be so aggressive means that this almost certainly saved his life!!
The clear link between Prostate cancer and the men in the Mills family is undeniable and as such is something that, while it doesn’t rule our lives, sits ever present in our minds.
It’s for this reason that my Dad and I are taking on the Everest Base Camp challenge and trying to raise awareness and funds so that early diagnosis, treatment and recovery from Prostate cancer becomes the norm.
Please help raise the awareness of this killer disease by donating whatever you can. We are personally funding this Everest expedition so 100% of the money you donate will go The Prostate Project.
