I did it! Thank you very much to all of you who sponsored me (the page remains open to donations until end-May). I crossed the line in 3 hours 34 minutes and 53 seconds.
Easter Sunday: Just completed my last long run...22 miles, phew! (well next weekend is 18 miles, so technically tapering). I've now clocked up over 450 miles since the start of the year and shaved 11 minutes off my half marathon PB.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. As you've found out, I'm running the London marathon on 25th April 2010 for St John Ambulance. Training kicked in with the New Year in the ice and snow and I don't think that even altitude training and the gruelling climb of the 6088 metre Huayna Potosi above la Paz quite fully prepared me for the punishing miles ahead! I'm guessing that the wine and steak in Argentina probably didn't help so much...
St John Ambulance is a great charity to support and is present at most events across the country, ranging from the local school bonfire and festivals to sporting events such as the London Marathon. However this is often not funded by conventional means and relies on the work of the charity and its 45,000 first aid volunteers. Their work has benefited many people, perhaps even yourself or your friends and family at such events and from here you can understand their importance.
I do hope you will sponsor me and donate to St John Ambulance. I'm looking forward to the challenge of my first marathon (have I just committed to running more than one?! Oops.)... £15 could pay for the running costs for one Crusader ambulance for one hour.
£45 could equip a volunteer with a first response kit containing all the basic medical aids (s)he is likely to require at an event.
My target of £2000 could pay for an automated external defibrillator which is the crucial link in the chain of survival after a heart attack.
If you've scrolled down this far, you may want to know that while caring for people at the marathon, St John Ambulance will use 250 tubs of petroleum jelly, 200 bottles of baby oil, 400 ice packs, 2000 plasters!
