Story

On November 11th-16th GVI Cape Town are having our biggest Charity Challenge yet! This amazing challenge is inspired by the environmental aims of the 350.org (www.350.org) campaign to raise awareness about carbon emissions and climate change. .

Wednesday 16th - Hiking form Fish Hoek to Kirstenbosch then up Table Mountain, 30km.

The challenge will be raising funds via the GVI Charitable Trust www.gvi.org, (our registered charity) to directly support two causes. Our Cape Town volunteers and staff work out of two bases, Gordon’s Bay and Fish Hoek. The Fish Hoek team have chosen to try and raise R15000 for the purchasing of a new container classroom at The Hope Centre in the Westlake community. The Gordon’s Bay team are also aiming for R15000 to convert two of the current buildings at Mama Lumka's Ikhayalethemba Village into classrooms for a new Grade R (Kindergarten) as part of the Village’s sustainability program.

The Hope funds will cover purchasing a converted shipping container and provide extras for turning it into a much more positive learning environment than the current classrooms. This would then leave the current classrooms to be converted into a set office and workspace for the Hope staff as well as proper organised storage which will allow us to invest in more vital resources.

The Ikhayalethemba Grade R is going to involve completely stripping the houses and removing and putting up walls to make the most of the space and allowing it to cope with the physical and educational needs of up to 30 children. The minimum figures will allow us to take on each of these projects but the more we can raise the better we can make the environments and in particular the education and physical development resources and equipment.
