Story

UPDATE

Well, we all made it! Many thanks to all of you who have given us such immense support. We are completely overwhelmed to have made over £1000 for the South Georgia Heritage Trust and  the Habitat Restoration fund. Well done Richie for breaking the Island Record and sprinting through at 1H 37M 58S!!!

It's the taking part that is important, so thanks not only to the runners, runklers and walkers - but also to our marshalls: Sarah, Ainslie, Jane and Tony and Matt - our resident trophy maker! Thanks again to all our friends and family who have so kindly supported us!

All of us at King Edward Point & Grytviken, South Georgia.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

This is no ordinary Half Marathon -as you can see from the picture! There's LOTS of UP - but we are ordinary people. Some of us are runners, but most of us are not! We also have something in-between called "Runkling" which is a kind of walking/running. The South Georgia Half Marathon is an age old tradition for the residents at .  This year we have decided that it's time to put all that pain and agony to a good cause. We plan to run, walk, hobble the entire route, come rain or shine (most likely rain - we've had terrible weather this summer!) on Wednesday 17th February 2010.

We would like to support The South Georgia Heritage Trust ( www.sght.org) and in particular, their planned Habitat Restoration Programme. The Trust seeks to undertake projects that will conserve and protect the island’s important natural habitat, such as restoring large areas of habitat where threatened species of birds are unable to breed due to the presence of rats introduced some 150 years ago.  By increasing breeding birds numbers on by millions, this restoration of bird habitat will restore the island to its earlier status as the most important seabird island in the world.

Another purpose of the Trust is to preserve the historical heritage of South Georgia including selected historical sites of importance and to conserve the in order to increase international awareness of the lessons and achievements of the human history of .
