It's a tradition here in South Georgia to do slightly crazy things - we have to make our own amusement here on the island! And the time is coming around again to build up our fitness and start preparing ourselves for the Annual South Georgia Half Marathon.
Some of us will run, some will "runkle" (which means "run when you can, walk the rest" and the more sedate (and possibly more sensible) of us will walk.
We plan this auspicious event on the 7th February 2011 - weather allowing, and hope to have 10-15 people participating and ideally completing the marathon! Cakes, orange squash and (if we're lucky) fudge will be available to the participants with an optional Gin & Tonic (being an local tradition) made available at the end to all participants. This will be followed by a nice hot sauna to ease those aching bones.
This year again we will be supporting the South Georgia Heritage Trust, our local charity. This year is especially important, as the Trust begin Phase One of their five year plan to restore the habitat of the island to it's original state and to bring back many of the beautiful birds to this beautiful place.
