St. James's Place Sprint Triathlon · 20 September 2006

5.4 million children across the world are currently trapped in orphanages – even though 80% of them have family they could live with if they had the right support. Orphanages harm children, depriving them of love and exposing them to abuse. Your support helps us get children to back to family.

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

This October, we - namely:

Jo & John Carter

Jane & Graham Howe

Helen & David Leigh

Catherine & David Wells

will be competing in a Sprint Triathlon. This will involve us completing a 400m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run, early on a cold, (probably wet) Sunday morning.

To add an edge we have entered two teams of respective husband and wives.  This could well end up in the divorce courts!!

The money raised from this event by St. James’s Place Partners and Staff will be generously matched by the St. James’s Place Foundation and, as in previous years, will go to Hope and Homes for Children – an international children’s charity which provides a family and a future to orphaned and abandoned children in Eastern Europe and Africa.

This year, the money we raise will support their project in Rwanda.  In just 3 months, more than 800,000 people lost their lives in the 1994 genocide and there are now an estimated 400,000 post-genocide orphans.  The country’s problems have been exacerbated further by the effect of HIV/AIDS and there are approximately 270,000 HIV/AIDS orphans in Rwanda. Of the eight million people now living in Rwanda, more than half are under the age of 18 and therefore many of these orphans are living in child-headed households.

It is in this context that Rwanda now finds itself in a long but determined rebuilding process. Hope and Homes for Children is supporting many of those with the greatest needs. The aim of their project is to help families who are at risk of breaking up and those living in abject poverty to re-build their lives and become self-sufficient.  They are helping them to help themselves.  Currently, they support more than 800 children in Rwanda.  By sponsoring us you could help to raise £150,000, which will enable Hope and Homes for Children to scale up the programme and support an additional 50 families in 2007.

Many thanks in anticipation of your support.

Yours sincerely
