adidas Women's 5K Challenge 2010 · 5 September 2010 ·

First Touch supports sick and premature babies cared for at St George’s neonatal unit in SW London. We fund state-of-the-art equipment and specialist staff training which are outside of the scope of NHS budgets, as well as a range of initiatives to support families during their stay on the unit.

Story

On September 5th a group of women will be taking on the Adidas 5K Challenge at Hyde Park. We are all connected in some way to the Neonatal Unit at St George's Hospital, either as staff, or as families and friends of babies cared for on the Unit now or in the past.

The Neonatal Unit at St George's cares for over 500 babies each year. Some are premature, some are born full term but need attention, some require surgery. Some stay for a couple of days, some stay for many months. All receive care from the inspirational and dedicated staff who work at this 'centre of excellence'.

Our aim is to raise funds which will be used to purchase vital equipment for the Neonatal Unit. The charity's current campaign is to raise £36,000 for a transport incubator. This is used to transport vulnerable babies between hospitals. It has all the functions of a standard incubator, as well as in-built monitoring devices and a ventilator. As the level 3 centre which takes the sickest and tiniest babies from Kingston, Epsom, Mayday and St Helier Hospitals you can imagine that this piece of kit, once bought, will get a lot of use. We would love to be able to make a contribution towards this.
