Participants: Ethiopia school building project

Hello,
As some of you may already know, I will be going to Ethiopia in March 2012 on behalf of Plan International to help with a school building project.
There are 20 of us from Turner going and over the next few months we will be planning a variety of fundraising events in order to raise enough money to make this project happen.
We are paying for our accommodation and travel costs ourselves (with help from Turner) so your donations will go directly towards building materials and local labourer costs.
We need to raise at least £1k each which is quite daunting so any small amount you can donate will be very much appreciated! J
It’s all for a really good cause – more info below:
Thanks for your support,
Stef

Project
Remeda Two Primary School, Shebedino has 397 pupils (206 girls and 191 boys) aged between 6-12 years and nine teachers. The school only has six classrooms, each of which are shared by 66 children on average. The existing classrooms are dark, overcrowded and in need of rehabilitation.
The level of learning is minimal and many pupils drop out of school. There are only two latrines at the school which are not suitable for the number of pupils, as such sanitation, particularly for girls, is frequently compromised. Teachers at the school have limited resources in terms of information technology and books; as a result they struggle to deliver quality lessons.
The school offers pupils grades one to six, but would like to offer up to grade eight in order to encourage children to stay in school longer. Owing to the long distance from the village to the local secondary school, few children go onto secondary education. Expansion at Remeda would mean that children in the area would gain a higher level and better quality of education.
Project Aim
With the support of Turner Broadcasting, Plan will build and equip six new classrooms, rehabilitate six old classrooms and improve sanitation facilities for 396 pupils at Remeda Two Primary School. Plan will also work with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to ensure that the project is sustainable.
Project Activities
· Construct six classroom blocks and rehabilitate six existing classrooms
· Construct one block of latrines with six cubicles – two for girls, two for boys, one female and one male teacher
· Supply all classrooms with school furniture
· Train PTA to manage schools direction and promote child participation in development projects
· Support a cluster resource centre accessible to over 50 teachers from the local area (hosted at the District Centre, 2km away) by supplying computers and books.
