Story

On Sunday 1 May 2011, Jon Sweeney, Phil Reid, Simon Sheehan, Gary Pole and I will commence a great challenge - cycling the entire length of Britain from end-to-end: John O’Groats to Land’s End. Over the two weeks we will endeavour to cover the entire 1000 miles, climb to over 3500 feet, battle against any of foul weather conditions this island throws at us and endure being overtaken by lorries doing 60 mph a couple of inches from your ear.

This is a massive physical and psychological challenge fo me as I do not have any long distance cycling experience, do not enjoy hill climbs and as I am in my forties no longer consider myself to be in the prime of my life.

I bought a bike in October 2010 and soon found that the old adage ‘once you have ridden a bike, you can always ride a bike’ is not strictly true as the person who said this in my view had not had the pleasure of "cleats". Having fallen off a few times and picking up a few cuts and bruises, I am now cycling 30 mile rides with the anticipation of increasing the distance in the forthcoming months.

However the tribulations we encounter (muscle ache, chafing, and head-on winds etc) and hopefully overcome will be all worth it with your help.

We are doing this to raise money for Equip. Equip is a Christian charity working with church leaders and government organisations in East Africa to promote opportunity and excellence primarily in education and health. Equip has two principal development projects underway that require funding – a secondary school and a health centre in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. If you wish to find out more about the project and to keep up to date on our progress, please go to www.equipuk.org.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell your details or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Equip and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for Equip. (If you prefer to pay by cheque, then please send your cheque to the Equip Office made out to 'EquipUK' at Equip, Lakesmere House, Allington Lane, Fair Oak, Eastleigh, Hants SO50 7DB, specifying that it is for JOGLE).We’re aiming to raise a minimum of £40,000. This is a big target, especially in these difficult economic times, so your donation will be gratefully received.

Thank you for your interest, we will really appreciate any contribution, big or small to help us in achieving our goal!

Steve
