Tower Bridge to Tupton · 3 June 2011

Prevent Breast Cancer is the only UK charity funding ground-breaking research solely aimed at preventing breast cancer for future generations. Our research will one day bring about a world where breast cancer is preventable and thousands are saved from ever experiencing this terrible disease.

Story

Running from 2nd – 5th June 2011, this challenge is perfect for anyone with a sense of adventure and is a great way to get fit as the participants tackle the task of cycling over 200 miles in just three days. It’s designed to push the riders stamina to the limits, but the beautiful scenery, fantastic people and the sense of achievement they will gain make it all worthwhile.

Thanks to the efforts of the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline awareness has increased significantly and the charity now works to provide advice and support to people, both women and men, at risk of developing hereditary breast cancer.

The two cancer causing genes, BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, are present in both women and men.  Women who carry alterations in BRCA2 have up to an 85% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and up to 27% risk of developing ovarian cancer.  Males who carry alterations in BRCA2 are estimated to have a 5-10% risk of breast cancer.

A woman's risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she inherits a deleterious (harmful) BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. Men with these mutations also have an increased risk of breast cancer. Both men and women who have harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations may be at increased risk of other cancers.

The event begins in London’s buzzing city centre near the iconic Tower Bridge where the group will come together at the start of the ride. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the capital behind, they will then begin a picturesque journey through the leafy suburbs of southern England before journeying north through the Home Counties and the East Midlands. Each of the three legs will see the riders visit a number of Premiership Rugby Clubs before undertaking a final testing 79 miles to reach the final destination and enjoy a celebratory welcome return to Tupton!
