Friends,
As you may know, I lost a lengthy battle to keep my left leg just over a year ago and now get around with the aid of a rather sophisticated peg-leg. Anyway, on my journey back to mobility I came across a number of other amputees and learnt that for many, their journey was not as fortunate as my own. I learnt that many, many amputees struggle to overcome the hurdles that come with limb loss and quickly default into a life predicated on the flawed assumption that once you lose a limb you have to abandon your life goals and live your life in a way that is entirely determined by the fact that you are 'disabled'. There's some rather depressing government data that supports this premise and essentially says that if you lose a limb there's a high probabily that you will never work again, suffer from depression and die young - mad.
I know from my own experience that coming to terms with life without a leg isn't a giggle, but I also know that it doesn't have to pan-out in the way that it does for so many. That's why I have agreed to join an expedition to trek an extended length of The Great Wall of China. This campaign is being organised by LimbPower, a dedicated UK charity who seek to help new amputees rebuild their lives by raising awareness that being disabled is a challenge but not a barrier to a full and rewarding life. The charity offers physical, social and psychological support to the disabled by aiding rehabilitation and improving the quality of life through the medium of recreational and competitive sports and arts. You can find out more about the charity and the trek at www.limbpower.com
The expedition is now booked and will take place next October . The trek is described (for non amoutees) as challenging and will see me cover around 60 miles in 9 days, ascending and descending literally thousands of steps.
So, cutting to the chase, I need your help - in addition to raising awareness about what amputees can achieve, the expedition is also being used as a vehicle to raise much needed funds to support the chraity and the population it seeks to serve. I am therefore asking you to consider supporting me in my challenge by agreeing to some financial sponsorship. For those that are in position to consider corportate sponsorship, I would be happy to wear your corporate logo, scribe your business name on my face and, within reason, anything else that might persuade you that this is a cause worth supporting.
I hope you feel able to support this great cause - any and all contributions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Steve
