24 Hour Welsh Three Peaks Challenge · 23 June 2010

The Welsh Guards have recently returned from a successful tour of Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Throughout the summer they relentlessly took the fight to the Taliban and conducted over 3242 combat patrols and sustained no less than 1463 attacks from the enemy. These successes were not without some considerable cost including the deaths of 7 soldiers, including the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, the highest ranking officer killed in action since the Falkland’s War. In addition, a considerable number of soldiers have been in hospital and are now in rehabilitation centres. Furthermore, we must expect that more will, in the longer term, be mentally invalided by their experiences. The next 10 years promise to make extraordinary demands on the Regiment, serving Welsh Guardsmen, their partners and families and those members of the Regiment who have left through disability or work-related illness. The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal is designed to support, alleviate and improve the prospects of those consequently in need. •Support the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship. •Support those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members. •Support the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.

On the 23rd June, 30 of our students will be undertaking the enormous challenge of walking the highest mountains in each region of Wales (South, Mid and North) in just 24 hours.

We will start at Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, from there travel to Cader Idris in Mid Wales and then onto the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon.

The charity we have chosen to support is The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal.  Many of our students will become the Welsh Guards of the future; indeed many are already personally linked to the Guards via serving family and friends.  They are only too aware of the outcome of military involvement in Operations such as Afghanistan, and are therefore committed to contribute to the well-being of returning soldiers and their families.

The Welsh Guards served with great distinction in Afghanistan. Like other Regiments, they bore their share of casualties as they carried out their difficult and dangerous work. The Charity aims to provide the following:

·        Support to the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship.

·        Support to those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members.

·        Support to the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.

We would be most grateful for any assistance you can offer, however small the contribution.

We are sure you will agree this is a major challenge the students are undertaking, and for an extremely meaningful and worth-while cause, and we hope you will consider how to contribute.
