Bupa Great Birmingham Run 2014 · 19 October 2014 ·

The brain is the most complex organ in our body. It controls our emotions, senses and actions. So when it breaks down, we break down. We fund the best research to discover the causes, develop new treatments and improve the lives of those affected. Let’s unite to accelerate progress. Today.

Story

On Tuesday 20th September 2011 my Mum, Margaret 'Maggie' Clark passed away, having been diagnosed with sporadic CJD. The affect that my Mum's passing has had on my entire family is immeasurable and her loss still hurts now.

To begin with I wasn't sure how I would cope with losing her, all I did know was that I wanted to make her proud of me, so I decided to make something positive out of this situation and turn my life around. It is fair to say that prior to September 2011 I had let myself go and was an overweight couch potato, however I have since managed to lose over 8 stone in weight and have taken up running during the past twelve months in order to help with and maintain my weight loss.

The Bupa Great Birmingham Run 2014 will be the first time that I have ever attempted or competed in a half marathon and hopefully a fitting tribute for my Mum in what would have been her 60th year. I will also be looking to raise money for the Brain Research Trust and hope that any money raised will in some way go towards identifying treatment and an eventual cure to this very cruel disease.
