HSBC Arctic Challenge 2018 · 3 August 2018 to 10 August 2018 ·
On August 3rd, 2018, myself and 99 other HSBC colleagues will trek 65 miles within the Arctic Circle in Greenland. With no access to typical facilities, everyone will be carrying their own personal equipment and camping gear for 5 days, sleeping rough in the middle of nowhere, in order to raise money and awareness for WaterAid.
There are many NGOs which provide health aid to underdeveloped countries across the world. Those NGOs support various issues such as disease and famine. However, a clean water supply supported through WaterAid could prevent many health related issues before they have an opportunity to fester.
Currently 663 million people (10% of the world's population) live without safe water and over 800 children die every single day from diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. WaterAid aims to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalized people by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, and hopes to give everyone safe access to water by 2030. Clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene should be a normal part of everyone’s daily life. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. With clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene, children are born healthier. They get the chance to go to school and grow up to become adults. Women and men get to earn a living. Whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be.
Volunteering is massively important to me. I believe if we aren't volunteering and attempting to progress mankind and help less fortunate then life is less meaningful. We need to focus on a better life for future generations. Continue to move forward to witness progress and leverage our resources to ensure it occurs.
