Story

In July this year, Steve and Liza, Lizzy (16), Tom (12), and Michael (14) are heading to Tanzania for 6 weeks to work with a children's charity called Mkombozi.

The vast majority of people have not heard of this small, Tanzanian children’s charity so there is some additional information attached below and a link to their website. This charity is doing absolutely fantastic work. Imagine, living on the streets. No food. No love. No future. You are 8 years old. Home is worse than this. Then you get a vision of these children's lives.

Every penny that we raise will go directly to the projects to help children: these funds are not covering any overheads or marketing costs. Our family will target the funds to a project/cause where the benefits will be greatest.

Here is what your donation to Mkombozi will do:

£9 feeds a child nutritious food for a month…

£51 provides medical care to one child for year...

£114 enables a child to attend secondary school for a full year

It is almost unbelievable that even small sums can make such a large difference to these disadvantaged kids: kids who have not been given many opportunities in life and are subject to almost unimaginable prejudices and pressures.

We guarantee that what you give will give real and measurable results to these incredibly unfortunate children.

Background on Mkombozi

Mkombozi (meaning "liberator" or "emancipator" in Swahili) is the leading child-focused agency in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, using education, research, advocacy, and outreach to help vulnerable children. Initially established in 1997 as a live-in residential centre and safe haven for children living on the streets, Mkombozi has expanded its scope over the years. In addition to working with children already living / working on the streets, Mkombozi works to end the abuse and neglect of children, to ensure that children's rights are recognised, and to identify opportunities for intervention before a child migrates to the street. Today, Mkombozi works with over 1,000 children and families a year in Kilimanjaro and Arusha Regions.

Ultimately Mkombozi plans to enable children and communities to actively drive their own development agenda, to work towards the vision of a world where all children and youth are prioritised and can access opportunities to become well rounded and productive people in a more just and democratic society.... a pretty challenging vision to achieve.

To this end, Mkombozi’s services are wide ranging and include:

Street outreach

Shelter, food and healthcare

Training and facilitation

Education

Fostering and reunification

Mentoring

Safe schools

Psychosocial support

Computers and IT skills

Advocacy

Research

Self-actualisation, recreation and leisure

Self-reliance
