We fund research into muscle-wasting to improve the lives of everyone affected.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The most common types of Muscular Dystrophy cause the relentless wasting and weakening of muscles. All muscles. Sometimes mild symptoms only begin to show in adulthood - for some children they are so severely affected from birth that they do not have long to live.

Our son William, who is 12 year old, has Becker Muscular Dystrophy. At the moment William is unaware of the severity of his condition, but his greatest wish is to be normal and experience what it is like to be able to run and play football like his friends - he recently said that he wishes he could experience what it is like for just one day. He is slower, less agile, needs daily physiotherapy and needs support to negotiate stairs and is inclined to trip and fall easily. He is exhausted just getting around school. He is otherwise an ordinary, bright, often funny, fun loving, music loving, typical 12 year old boy. I do worry about William's future and although it occupies my mind for a great deal of the time I find it difficult to talk, and think about it very much.

As Becker Muscular Dystrophy progresses, the sufferer will lose muscle strength in all muscles - legs, arms, back, neck, respiratory, heart. It becomes difficult and then impossible to dress, wash, or even raise a fork to your mouth to eat without great effort or help, and eventually, being unable to walk will require a powered wheelchair and even then the decline relentlessly continues.

Becker Muscular dystrophy is a life shortening condition with no treatment, and no cure.

 We are lucky.

The most common form is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Around two boys a week are born with this devastating condition. Most boys will need a wheelchair by the age of 11 and are unlikely to survive past their late teens.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is a registered charity that funds pioneering research into treatments and cures gives hope for a brighter future for William and many thousands of others affected by all 43 forms of Muscular Dystrophy.

This is why I am running for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign we must continue to fund research and awareness.

This really is a race against time!
