Volunteering in Hoima Hospital, Uganda · 22 June 2013

BHPH is a partnership between Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust and Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Hoima, Uganda. It's aim is to improve the delivery of healthcare to the people of Hoima Region. The Charity is working in particular to improve maternal and child health.

Story

Pregnancy and childbirth are times of joy and happiness; however that is not the case for everyone. In Uganda, 438 mothers per 100,000 live births die yearly due to pregnancy related complications, however this number maybe  much larger – this can be compared to the UK where 7 mothers per 100,000 births die.  These deaths largely occur due to excessive bleeding, infection and high blood pressure, which with proper training and equipment, can be treated easily and quickly and could prevent unnecessary deaths.

Gemma, Hannah, Becky, Jess, Laura and Emily are all final year student midwives, who are planning a two week trip to Hoima hospital in Uganda in partnership with Basingstoke Hoima Partnership for Health charity. The aim of this trip is to help improve their maternity services and provide training, which in turn could help to reduce their mortality and morbidity rates, whilst improving the care that these women deserve.

We are all funding 100% of the trips ourselves, so all money raised will be going directly to the charity.

We hope to raise money to put towards buying necessary equipment and training resources that can help to improve the maternity services and care that is provided at Hoima hospital, Uganda.

Please support this amazing cause - every little helps!

Thankyou,

Gemma, Becky, Hannah, Laura, Jess and Emily.
