Sheffield Scanner Appeal
Campaign by University of Sheffield (RCN HMRC Registered)
We need your help to bring the future of medical imaging to Sheffield.

Story

The Big Walk 2018 is a 26.2 mile marathon distance Peak District walk on 22nd June starting in Lodge Moor on the edge of Sheffield, heading out to the Peak District and ending on the University campus. It is just one part of a massive campaign to raise £2 million for an MRI-PET scanner that will be the first facility of its kind in Yorkshire and will be in a building attached to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

What is an MRI-PET scanner?
The revolutionary scanner combines Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) technology to produce highly detailed pictures of the inside of the body in a single scan. Capturing anatomy and metabolic activity together will enable doctors to see what is happening inside a diseased organ with unprecedented detail and whether it is responding to treatment. It will help increase understanding of the causes, effects and developments of many devastating illnesses, including:
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Epilepsy,
  • Diabetes,
  • Heart and lung diseases,
  • Motor Neuron Disease (MND/ALS),
  • Multiple Sclerosis,
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke.

Impact of the scanner
Doctors will be able to arrive at a more precise and accurate assessment of serious conditions leading to better treatments and monitoring of patients. The knowledge provided by the scanner will give researchers the opportunity to take new discoveries from the laboratory into clinical trials and develop new therapies and better outcomes for patients. Breakthroughs in research will lead to easier and faster diagnosis, characterisation, staging and treatment of disease.
Improved treatment of diseases should also have a positive impact on patients’ mental wellbeing since many of these illnesses can be so debilitating and recovery such a long process that patients and even their loved ones find it difficult to sustain morale when exhausted by either the treatment or the disease itself.

Why I am fundraising

I don’t think I have ever walked anywhere near 26.2 miles in a day but I have decided to take part because several of my friends and family members have suffered from cancer in the last few years and I have felt powerless to help them. To me the Big Walk is a win-win because it combines an opportunity to help raise money for a scanner that has the potential to transform many people’s lives with a chance to get fitter and spend a day in the peak district with like minded people.
