Story

Yesterday on Sunday 27th March 2011 my daughter Vicky and I took part in the 14 mile Marsden March between the Chelsea and Sutton branches of the Royal Marsden Hospitals.

It was a lovely warm sunny day and a lovely route from Chelsea, past Stamford Bridge, (boo! hiss!) over the Thames at Putney Bridge, down to Wimbledon Common, through Nonsuch Park, Cheam and onto the Royal Marsden at Sutton.

We had sore feet at the end but we did it in about 4 hours.

We did it because my son Alex was treated for a rare benign brain tumour at the Royal Marsden in Sutton where he had 6 weeks of radiotherapy in late 2009.

Alex has been very lucky to receive such wonderful care at the Royal Marsden and we can see how the fundraising has been helping to improve and update the facilities there.  He is still a regular visitor, as an outpatient, at the brand new Childrens & Teenagers Unit which is absolutely fantastic.

Alex's life is returning to normal following his illness, he is back at school, learning to play the drums, a regular visitor at a local gym and generally enjoying life again with his friends and family.  Hopefully, he will be playing tennis again soon!

Alex has been through so much, and been so brave throughout his treatment, helping The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign ensures that kids like Alex will get the treatment they need in the future.

A couple of new images on the site - one of the Certificate that the lovely Radiographers gave Alex at the end of his treatment.  It shows the CDs that they allowed Alex to listen to whilst he was undergoing his Radiotherapy.  We were all experts on Hip Hop and Rap by the end!

If you came with us on any of the 30 days - we had a ritual where a sticker was put on the day to count them down.  The visitor always got to pick - can you see yours?
