It has taken me four attempts to gain a place in the Virgin London Marathon and now the hard work really begins - uh-oh...  Running a Marathon is no easy feat but one that takes many months of training "whatever the weather".  I have just completed a 10k and have a Half Marathon in February and one in March to ensure I keep on track, but there are many other long runs that I will need to put in to ensure I line up on 17th April in London with the best chance of completing my goal. I have decided to make the most of this opportunity and to raise funds for St John Ambulance, in particular the Bexhill division. We are activly involved with this unit  and they would dearly like some new equipment to help them with the vital training that they offer.  In particular they need a new "recussie dummy" to help teach the life-saving skill of CPR, a dummy that is a true representation of adult resucitation in this day and age. It is attractively named "Fat Old Fred" and, as the name suggests, reflects the larger profile of people in this day and age. St John Ambulance are one of the largest First Aid Training organisations in Britain as they train the general public as well as their own Volunteer First Aiders who go out and provide First Aid cover at public events (Including the Virgin London Marathon) in addition to providing back up to the NHS Ambulance Trusts at times of need such as the snow and ice we experienced last December. There are many public events that would have to be cancelled if First Aid cover were not available, and these volunteers give their time freely... About St John Ambulance Every year, nearly 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live St John Ambulance believe that it’s absolutely unacceptable that so many people die needlessly – because no one could give them first aid when they needed it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid - about 800,000 last year alone – so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. St John Ambulance teach young people in <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/schools.aspx">schools</a> and through their activities for <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/young-people.aspx">young people</a>. St John Ambulance <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/courses-for-the-workplace.aspx">teach people in the workplace</a> and provide <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/shop.aspx">first aid products</a>. St John Ambulance teach <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/courses-for-the-general-public.aspx">people in the community</a>. And St John Ambulance teach people who become their volunteers, who offer their skills and time to be the difference right in the heart of their community – at public events, <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/what-we-do/community-first-responders.aspx">first responders</a> or <a href="http://www.sja.org.uk/sja/what-we-do/emergency-response.aspx">back up to local ambulance services</a>. As a charity, St John Ambulance are committed to making sure more people can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
