Story
Hello,
This February my family lost their mother / wife / grandmother and great-grandmother to Ovarian Cancer. Audrey had always been an incredibly healthy and active woman, who was an enormous inspiration to us all. Audrey was given a diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer just before Christmas 2012 and passed away in the middle of February. It was too late for her to be given life-saving treatment. Sadly my grandmother's story is not uncommon.
Ovarian Cancer is the fourth biggest killer in the United Kingdom, despite only being the fifth most common cancer in women. This is largely because the disease's symptoms are difficult to spot, and difficult to diagnose. Treatment at a late stage is often invasive and unsuccessful, and there have been no new life extending treatments in over 20 years.
It was bad enough watching my grandmother, who had lived a long and happy life, deteriorate so quickly from this disease. I would hate to think of a younger woman going through it, and sadly this does happen. That is why I felt I should do something. That is why I am going to run the Great North Run, in memory of my grandmother, and for all women affected by cancer.
