I am running in the Bath Half Marathon on 7th March this year and I am hoping to raise some money for the Battery Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT). This is a charity based in Devon that seeks to rescue 'spent' battery hens nationwide, and re-home them as pets. Battery hens only have a useful life of 1 year and after that they are slaughtered. A battery hen has a floor space equivalent to an A4 sheet of paper, they can't move around and they never see the sun. When the BHWT rescue hens they are weak through lack of movement and they are usually missing most, if not all, their feathers. Within a couple of months of being re-homed the hens are plump and happy and covered in feathers again, just as they should be.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.
Please dig deep and donate. If pennies are scarce right now you can still help by ensuring that you only buy free range eggs, and look carefully at processed products that contain eggs. Mayonnaise, pasta, quiche, pancakes and many ready-made meals contain eggs from caged hens. Start looking at labels: they will state "free range egg" if this is what has been used. Lets start giving laying hens freedom, fresh air and a chance to taste green grass.
If you think you can adopt a hen or two you can contact the charity below for more information:
