On 11th September this year, Tim, Caitlin & Nick will all be running the Robin Hood Half Marathon in Nottingham again to raise money for the MS Society of Great Britain. We raised over £3,000 doing this event in 2009, so let's see if we can beat that.
Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive neurological condition that affects around 85,000 people in the UK. It's a disease with a thousand faces that affects different people in different ways. It can cause a variety of symptoms including loss of balance and mobility, extreme fatigue, depression and mood swings. There is currently no cure and few effective treatments, but with the right support and information people can continue their lives. For many people, that support and information comes directly from the MS Soclety.
The Multiple Sclerosis Society is a registered charity that was founded in 1953 and relies almost entirely on voluntary donations for its income. Since its foundation, the MS Society has invested more than £50 million in bio-medical and applied research and currently has an £11 million commitment to around 50 projects across the UK. They also help the NHS to fund a team of specialist MS Nurses who provide sufferers with valuable treatment, multidisciplinary care and - most importantly of all - tea, sympathy and advice.
MS is a disease that has touched our lives and the lives of people we love, and running thirteen or so miles across Nottingham seems like a relatively small price to pay to raise some money to help the Society continue with their excellent work and research.
