Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit
the TNN JustGiving page.
Throughout her work, Tracy
sees at first hand the difficulties endured by children with Asperger's
Syndrome, including at times the, let’s say, inappropriate actions of the
uninitiated. Given her remarkable patience (well, she's married to me for
example), she has the ability to assist in the development of those with
Asperger’s. Tracy
has a particular affinity with these youngsters. Without asking, I know that she will greatly
appreciate any support you choose to provide the Asperger’s Syndrome
Foundation.

So, what is Asperger’s Syndrome and
what is the Asperger’s Syndrome Foundation?
Asperger’s
Syndrome (AS) is a life-long condition on the autistic
spectrum, affecting more than 1 in 100 people. This neurological
development disorder is characterised by:
i) difficulties in social communication and interaction, ii) difficulties in flexibility of thinking (lack of theory of mind), iii) severe anxiety, as well as additional sensory issues, iv) obsessive compulsive disorder.
Collectively, the characteristics of AS contribute to the extreme isolation experienced by those with the condition. Often misunderstood and rejected, they have very low self-esteem which is usually expressed by anger and blame at the world around them. AS is often not recognised or diagnosed. It is common for children to attend mainstream schools, where they find the day to day life complex and difficult to deal with. They find it hard to make friends because they are seen as different by their teachers and peers, and as a result, they often experience loneliness and bullying. Children and young people with AS may also show signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Dyspraxia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), as well as difficulties with impulse control and anger management. This continues into adulthood. It is estimated that 30-50% of individuals with Asperger’s go undiagnosed. The Asperger's Syndrome Foundation is a small registered charity. It was established in 2002 with the support of parents whose sons/daughters have AS. It was developed as a result of parents experiencing a lack of specialist quality support and services. The aim of the Asperger's Syndrome Foundation is to heighten the awareness of this complex condition and address the deficit of information and services which continue to severely impact those with AS and their families. The Asperger's Syndrome Foundation aims to promote high quality support and services, and to enable people with AS to develop into members of the community who are respected for their contribution and recognised for their unique differences.
