Community Fun Run · 20 May 2012 ·

We fund research into potential treatments and cures for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a devastating genetic muscle-wasting disease that leads to paralysis, heart and lung failure and early death for all sufferers. We get involved to make a difference for all Duchenne sufferers. Help us find a cure.

Story

Hi everyone!

So, my little Emma is now 12 weeks old and the fog is finally lifting. And, for some unknown reason, I've taken up jogging! As fun as it has been to run round the block a few times I wanted to give myself a challenge so here we are...I've committed to running (with occassional bouts of jogging and walking) 5km at the Community Fun Run on Sunday 20th May in aid of The Duchenne Research Fund.

I selected this charity from the pool of amazing charities offered as it is a charity dealing with a disease which is close to my heart.

Duchenne is a devastating terminal muscle wasting disease that leads to paralysis and early death. Imagine being told your beautiful little boy will be in a wheelchair by the time he is ten. He will then lose the use of all of his muscles. Imagine being told that by his late teens or early twenties he will probably be dead. This is the heartbreaking reality of Duchenne. Duchenne is 100% fatal.

- Duchenne is 100% fatal.
- There is no cure, no exceptions.
- Duchenne occurs in 1 in every 3500 male births.
- 100 children a year are born in the UK with Duchenne.
- Duchenne is the biggest genetic killer in the UK.
- By age 11 most boys are confined to a wheelchair.
- Average life expectancy is late teens / early 20s

There is currently no treatment or cure for Duchenne, but there is hope. Hope lies in research and medical science. The Duchenne Research Fund continues to fund research and with your support progress towards finding a treatment and cure can and will become an exciting reality.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Talia.

xxxx

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
