Story

Just Giving Page

Hi! Thanks for taking your time out to come on my Just Giving page. Obviously I don’t expect you to donate without finding out anything about what I am doing so wait no further.

Myself

My name’s Tanya Compas, I’m a 17-year-old girl studying psychology, history and economics at Woodhouse College in the Borough of Barnet. A lot of people will assume that a volunteer has to be a tree hugging eco-maniac who wants to be mother Theresa, so to say that I am not the typical volunteer is an understatement. I’m a bubbly, outgoing and ambitious young woman constantly aiming to better myself in anyway possible. I’m always looking to partake in new activities and keep myself busy with various sports; I played football for pinnacle girls FC for 5 years between the years of 2003-2007, I am black tag level at Tai-Jitsu, a qualified SSI Scuba diver and also begun street dancing in June and have partaken in various competitions and shows. Recently there has been a lot of bad press regarding youths today, especially young black people, I refuse to become an ever increasing statistic and so after my gap year I am use skills that I have acquired abroad to help those back in Britain.

In the past I have not always grasped an opportunity by the hand and have let them slip by; the opportunity of a gap year in Peru however is one I am not willing to let go of. As of yet I do not feel ready to enter the higher education life of university, I’ve been in compulsory education for the majority of my childhood, however I honestly cannot say that there has been one day that I have fully appreciated it. I need to be able to mature and grow as an individual, not make stupid mistakes in university when I will not have my parents caring over my every whim, and my gap year will provide me with this and more.

Peru

Peru is a country situated in western South America. It is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Columbia, on the east by Brazil, on the south east by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru gained independence in 1821, and since has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well of periods of stability and economic upswing. This has left Peru in a state where 36.25% of its population is poor, including 12.6% of that being very poor. It is a country bursting with diverse cultures, with a population estimated at 29 million, including Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The main language spoken is Spanish however there is also a significant number of Peruvians who speak Qechua and other native languages. The vast mix of cultures has had an apparent influence on the cultural traditions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature and music. I have been selected to go to Peru for my Gap year with project trust. My work in Peru will involve me working in orphanages, helping with the day to day runnings of the institutions, then teaching some orphans English, organising extra curricular activities and helping the children with homework and reinforcement classes. In the current economic crisis, families are finding it harder and harder to provide for their children and so many end up in the orphanages. It is because of this that the orphanages are in desperate need for that extra pair of hands, which is what I will provide. Whilst I am there I will become the role model they need, become a big sister to them, someone they can look up to, which is a role
 I plan to fill

How Do I Plan On Raising It?

I will be fundraising through various means such as sponsored runs, cake sales, organising an auction evening, a Peruvian party, making jewellery, car washing, dance shows; basically anything and everything you can think could raise money I will be looking into it. I will hold events at various times of the year, from Christmas to Easter. Contacting various charitable trusts, businesses, radio stations, television stations, anyone I can think of that could provide me with any form of help, be it in the form of donations of kind, publicity, help with planning, or money will be contacted. Every little seriously counts, no matter how small or large or how much help you can provide me with it seriously will be appreciated.

I really hope to hear from you soon, any form of help is never too big or small! Any help can be repaid in the form of work, presentations, anything! If you are able to help I will try to keep you up to date with my gap year goings on with a blog on my facebook. If it is possible I will update it with pictures aswell so you can see how much of a difference your money has truly made to the lives of orphaned children and also my own. On my return I will send you a letter explaining my whole trip, the highs, the lows and what I have been able to gain out of it, and if you want me to I will be more then happy to come and give a presentation about my trip.
