Story
RESULTS
Well the event is over and the distances finalised. The team managed 496.2km, not quite as much as we hoped but our light wind target was not far off.
Full results were as follows:
1st The Unlikely Lads 548.3 Km
2nd The Non-Racers 536.7 km
3rd Pansh Pirates 507.94 km
4th Team Tornado 496.2 km
5th Pheonix Nights 493.2 km
6th Out of Control 285.3 km
These results are quite close for 24 hours of running and I think show the most level field since the first event back in 2007 - very impressive with good consistency!
The wind was better early on, initially Phoenix Knights and Team Tornado held a bit of a lead over the others but were never able to stretch it out, seeing the tables turned by the end. In fact the averages over the first few hours would have seen most teams hit 800km if the wind hadn't dropped away in the evening for a time, and then been replaced by fog in the early morning
So if you were waiting to find out distance before deciding how much to sponsor us - now you know!
(the page will remain open for a few weeks)
NEW - I have uploaded a few photos of the event (see top left) - the new Hoylake lifeboat station is in some of them - it's the building with the arched roof behind Chris.
I set up a Blog to enable us to report our status throughout the day, unfortunately the phone app stopped talking to it so the updates were not as dynamic as I intended. I did eventually realise I could just use the browser rather than the app, but that was 22.5 hours in.... If you want a bit more info and racing driver excuses, you can find them on the blog!
At this point I need to thank Chris and Lewis for inviting me to join their team, GaRRy for the original vision and overall organisation and Joolz for doing most of the donkey work because he lives closest to the club!
TEAM TORNADO
Thanks for visiting Team Tornado's fundraising page for the Hoylake 24 hour kite buggy challenge on the 5 - 6th June 2010.
This fun but gruelling event has 2 main purposes:
- To chase the world record* for the furthest distance covered in 24 hours by a team of 3 kite buggy pilots in relay.
- To raise some money for charity.
*or the British record, or at least beat our own distances from last year
Our charity:
Team Tornado has decided to support the RNLI with our efforts - they are the extra emergency service supported entirely by donations and crewed by volunteers.
Those volunteers are trained to the highest level to save lives at sea and will launch the boat to do so in conditions that test the boats and crew to their limits.
The team:
The team name comes from the buggies we use, the Trikbitz Tornado race buggy. Between us we have Mk I, Mk II and Mk III versions of the buggy, and they have all been raced hard!
All team members took part in the 2009 challenge in different teams, so each have a different personal best to aim for and all know what it takes to complete the event. Fortunately the winds were very light last year so the distances should be easily beatable with better conditions.
The 2009 results can be seen here, our teams were 'Hilbre Rollers', 'Team Fickle', and 'Phoenix Nights'.
Target distance:
Our target distance will depend on the forecast, so to keep things interesting we will start to check the forecasts with about a week to go, and then try to publish some realistic targets here. As a baseline, so long as there is a little wind right through we would aim for 500km. The world record stands at 1050km.
Donating:
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor us now!
Or, if you would rather wait and see just how many kilometres we managed to rack up before deciding on an amount, this page will stay open for a while after the event.
