THE CHALLENGE, Starting on 01/07/2011 to 06/07/2011 The sons and friends of Bob and Dot Whiteside are to cycle from Readingto Lands End, to support the Oxford Transplant Campaign. Also for Berkshire Royals Transplant Team, there will be a Triathlon at the start of the challenge to help fund the Transplant Team to take part in British Transplant Games in Belfast. It is going to take 4 challenging days cycling the distance, with a triathlon at the start on Friday at 6.30PM, at Harpers Carinval Pool Wokingham... plus one more at the finish, details to follow....... Why we are taking on this challenge? In May 2007 their Dad Bob, received a life-saving kidney-pancreas transplant that has now transformed his life. For some 35 years, Bob had suffered from type 1 diabetes. As a result of this unrelenting chronic disease, Bob was suffering from end stage renal failure because of his uncontrollable diabetes. He badly needed a new kidney. Bobs lucky number came up on May 9th 2007 when he was called to the Oxford Transplant Centre for replacement organs had become available. On that day, not only did he receive a transplanted kidney he also received a new pancreas. This new pancreas has meant that Bob no longer has to take the daily regimen of insulin shots to control his glucose. While his initial transplant operation was a physical and mental challenge, now after 4 years Bob has a new lease of life. He is enjoying the company of his family, and especially his 6 grandchildren as well as his new found friends made through every one associated with all aspects of the Renal Group.Bob and Dot and their family are incredibly grateful for the work and care provided by the Oxford Transplant Centre. So much so that their sons, friends and our Renal Transplant Nurse and her husband, have decide to take on the challenge of cycling to raise funds for the Oxford Transplant Campaign and also support for the Berkshire Royals Transplant Team. Bob has been at Royal Berkshire Hospital now for three years, and the Renal Team, including Consultants, Doctors, Transplant Nurses, ward nurses, office staff , etc offer first class care.   How are they going to do this?   Brothers Brian and Martin, with friends, Andrew, Paul and our Renal Transplant Nurse, Katy Priddis with her husband John, are all going to cycle 500 K, What route are they planning?   Starting at Royal Berkshire Hospital , Reading – Bath – Exeter- Dartmoor- Lands End ORGAN DONOR LINE 0300 123 23 23 <a href="http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk">www.organdonation.nhs.uk</a> OUR FIRST CYCLE DAY IS TO PROMOTE AND MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF BEING AN ORGAN DONOR. IN THESE HARD FINANCIAL TIMES, THIS IS THE ONE THING WE CAN ALL DO TO HELP OTHERS, THAT DOES NOT COST MONEY. PLEASE REMEMBER, IT COULD BE YOUR LOVED ONE THAT MAY NEED AN ORGAN, FOR A NEW LEASE OF LIFE. NEARLY 8,000 PEOPLE ARE ON THE TRANSPLANT LIST. SO PLEASE CAN WE HELP THEM. SINCE APRIL 2010 NEARLY 3,000 PEOPLE HAVE RECEIVED TRANSPLANTS. WHAT A WONDERFUL GIFT – THANKYOU We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us in 2008, and the good news is that at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, the Transplant Ward has moved to Magnificent New Accommodation, with 20 single rooms. They are now focusing on the facilities to Equip Oxford as one of Europe’s leading academic transplant centres. TEAM BOB CYCLE 500, HAVE FINISHED THEIR CHALLENGE. BOB AND THE SUPPORT TEAM ARE VERY PROUD OF THEIR ACHIEVEMENT. THEY HAVE HELPED RAISE THE AWARENESS OF THE DONOR CARD, AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO PATIENTS ON THE WAITING LIST. ALSO TO HELP WITH THE OXFORD TRANSPORT FOUNDATION, WHERE BOB'S REAL JOURNEY STARTED. WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR DONATIONS.
