Team: Remembering Jacob Wright
Richard Nelson, Liam O'Conner, Gavin Recht and Colin Willows have decided to join Team Jacum and cycle from London to Cambridge (60 miles) in memory of Jacob Wright who lost his fight with Mitochondrial Disease in April 2012 at just 16 months. They are all friends with Bob, Jacob's dad and want to help prevent what happened to Bob happen to other families.
Every 20 minutes a child is born with genetic changes that can cause Mitochondrial Disease by the age of 16. Mitochondria are the little batteries in every single one of our cells that give them the energy to do their job. When they don't work the cells don't work and this results in complex health problems and ultimately organ failure. There is no cure and it is a life limiting condition. In Jacobs case his brain was effected. He was well till 8 months then started to loose all his skills including his voice and smile, her suffered from uncontrollable epilepsy and ultimately the part of his brain that told him to breathe died. No one should have to plan their child's funeral and Bob and his wife Claire are determined to make sure one day it doesn't happen to other families like theirs. Richard, Liam, Gavin and Colin want to their best to help.
The Lily Foundation raise money to fund vital research into better diagnosis, treatment and cure and also provide vital support to families when they are going through the worst thing that can happen to a parent.
