The Royal Signals Charity supports Regular, Retired and Reserve Signallers. We do this by providing benevolence grants to those facing distress or hardship. We support our community through grants that look to encourage comradery, corps history and education of our trades.

Story

<p><span class="messageBody">Lieutenants Phil Taylor and Chris Darling are Troop Commanders currently serving at 22 Signal Regiment in Stafford, and 7 Signal Regiment in Elmpt, respectively. Having commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in December 2010, their careers are still very much at a fledgling stage but they are taking this opportunity to raise money for the Royal Signals Benevolent Fund and Army Ben<span class="text_exposed_show">evolent Fund</span></span></p> <p><span class="messageBody"><span class="text_exposed_show">Entering as Team Mercury Siberia, Phil and Chris will be trekking 155 miles on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal, near Irkutsk, Siberia, Russia. Climate is extreme and temperatures can range from extreme heat in the summer months to arctic conditions in winter, with a mean temperature in January of -19C although the wind can take it as low as -40C. The terrain itself is almost completely inhospitable and will put both men face to face with a challenge like they have never faced before. They will need to be entirely self-sufficient on their journey meaning everything they need, from tents to food will be pulled behind them on sleds. <br></span></span></p> <p><span class="messageBody"><span class="text_exposed_show">However, the challenge of competing in what has been billed as &lsquo;potentially the most terrifying race on the planet&rsquo; is only one motivation behind the decision to do so.
