Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving Page!

Imogen, Robin and Chris from Tearfund Donor Care team are attempting the Tube Challenge on Friday 13th June, to raise money for Tearfund. The challenge means visiting* all 270 London Underground stations in one day.

We’ve no idea exactly how long it will take, but the world record (which we’re not aiming for) is 16 hours and 20 minutes, so it’s going to be a huge challenge needing lots of energy and strategic planning to get round all the stations and hundreds of miles of tube lines.
And no, we’re not doing it for fun – we’re fundraising for Tearfund's No Child Taken campaign to prevent Child Trafficking.

Trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world, ravaging the lives of 1.2 million children across the world every year – that’s 3,300 children every day. That number is set to rise, unless we stop it in its tracks. The good news is: we can.

This is the difference that can be made by your generous support, and which will keep us inspired through a very long day, from Epping to Ealing and Walthamstow to Wimbledon and lots of places in between.
Please see www.nochildtaken for more info.

Desperately poor communities, who cannot afford to feed or to educate their children, are easy prey for traffickers, whose fraudulent offers of employment and a better way of life in a foreign country seem too good to be true.

Nang is 12 years old and lives in a small village in Laos, near the border with Thailand. She wants to be a nurse but knows that her parents can’t afford for her to stay in education beyond next year.

Those living in poor communities near the border area are vulnerable as traffickers offer well-paid work in bars and casinos (fronts for brothels). One in 3 children who leave Laos to go to Thailand end up in the sex trade. Without the knowledge of what happens to these children and with the grinding poverty and lack of hope, many families see this as on opportunity.

Tearfund’s partners in Laos, and in many other countries, are working through the local church, are working to eliminate child trafficking. Raising awareness of the dangers and the tactics of child traffickers is key in the most vulnerable communities. However removing that vulnerability and desperate poverty is the long-term solution, and the local church provides the best sustainable solution, with local knowledge, providing workshops and training opportunities, help and advice, the poverty that attracts the traffickers in the first place can be overcome.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. *=visiting means starting, finishing or passing through each station on the tube/train, on a service that stops at each station. Buses/running are allowed to connect but not cars/taxis
